Summary:
Glaucoma is a group of ocular diseases involving progressive optic nerve damage and gradual vision field loss. According to possible influence on glaucoma’s onset of coexisting ocular disorders we divide glaucoma into primary and secondary glaucoma. In both types diagnosis is based on intraocular pressure measurements, optic nerve morphological changes – visible in eye fundus and additional nerve examinations (Optical Coherence Tomography, Heidellberg Retina Tomograph, Glaucoma Detection). In secondary glaucoma a precise slit lamp examination is crucial in diagnostic procedure. Secondary glaucoma treatment is comparable to primary glaucoma treatment – topical, oral, general pharmacotherapy of ocular hypertension, laser and surgical interventions.
However, in different types of secondary glaucoma treatment involves additional procedures such as corticosteroids and miotics in inflammatory glaucoma, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents in neovascular glaucoma, laser trabeculoplasty in pseudoexofliation syndrome, panretinal photocoagulation laser in neovascular glaucoma.
