Summary:
Purpose: To validate efficacy of upper eyelid implant use in preventing and treating corneal and conjuntival complications in patients with logopthalmos.
Material and Methods: 25 patients were assigned to the study: 17 patients were operated on in The Clinic of Plastic Surgery in Polanica Zdrój, 8 patients we operated on in the Ophthalmology ward in Polanica Zdrój. The evaluation of the clinical efficacy was made 1 month and 6 years after the surgery.
Results: While in upright position 56% of patients were able to fully close their eyelids, 28% presented mild logopthalmos (1.0–2.0 mm) and 16% presented more than 2.0 mm of logopthalmos. While lying down 28% of patients were able to fully close their eyelids. 20% of patients sufferd from ptosis. 92% of patients maintained the upper eyelid mobility. 16% of patients had symetrical palpebral fissures. 68% of patients regarded the end result as very good, 32% as good.
Conclusions: Upper eyelid loading is an efficient method for corneal and conjuntival complications prevention in patients with logopthalmos. This method is safe and gives good cosmetic results.
