Summary:
Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed worldwide.
Due to epidemiological restrictions during the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of procedures was limited. The aim of this article
is the analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of the simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery in medical and economical terms.
Simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery may be an attractive form of cataract surgery for a patient due to one-time operational stress, a shorter time in hospital and post-operative visual rehabilitation. On the other hand, the economic profit for a medical facility should be higher in the case of simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery, provided that adequate funding is provided by the healthcare system. Individual decision as to simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery should be made individually after a comprehensive examination and conversation with the patient.
