Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most serious complications in diabetic patients. Retinal microcirculation damage leads to non proliferative retinopathy that can progress to proliferative form with development of retinal neovascularization. This process contributes to vision deterioration that can result in blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is considered the major cause of vision loss among adults in developed countries. Therefore it is essential to optimize existing treatment strategies and to introduce innovative therapies that can slow down progression of diabetic pathologies. Laser photocoagulation is regarded the standard treament method in vision loss prevention despite constant improvement in pharmacological modalities.
