Summary:
Dry Eye Disease is a globally occurring disease characterized by tear film homeostasis and associated ocular symptoms. The treatment of such an effect is symptomatic and the main measurement is the use of eye drops. When this method fails to produce desired effects, a temporary or permanent occlusion might be necessary. The work is dedicated to the temporary occlusion of the lacrimal ducts.
To this end, a general review of the available scientific literature has been performed. The focus was also on the use of information available on websites of plug manufacturers. The most important information that was necessary to write this work was extracted, and then plugs were divided into “permament” used for occlusion of lacrimal punctum and “intertissue” to occlude punctum and lacrimal canal. Their occurrence, differences and possible applications were presented. Based on the analysis of papers and scientific studies, it has been shown that the oclusion of endpoints generates desired effects, although the evidence quality is not always sufficient. Randomized trials to determine safety and separate lacrimal punctal obstruction are needed.
