Premature Birth Date as a Cause of Visual Organ Function Reduction in Children

Summary: Purpose: The objective of the study is to assess the incidence rate and the type of lesions in the visual organ among 6-years-old children with history of prematurity.
Material and Methods: The research was conducted in a group of 130 children born prematurely (between 25th and 34th week of pregnancy with body mass at birth of 560–2400 g). These children had been observed from their birth for the period of 6 years.
Results: Retinopathy affected 24.62% of eyes of examined prematurely born children. In 9 infants in the 3rd stage of the disease laser photocoagulation of the retina was performed. Visual acuity. In total, 102 (89.48%) of 6-year-olds with history of premature birth (196 eyes – 85.98%) could see properly. Refraction. A visible shift towards myopia was observed in the study group; myopia was found in 10.39% of eyes. Hyperopia in the study group was found in 26.15% of eyes. Among those born prematurely, emmetropic eyes were encountered most often, the largest group consisted of eyes with slight hyperopia. Eye fundus. The regular image of the fundus was observed among 107 prematurely born 6-years-old (82.31%) children. Positioning of the eyeballs. Improper positioning of the eyeballs without correction was found among 14.61% of the study group. Other common problems, are: intracranial haemorrhage, cerebral palsy, developmental coordination disorders.
