Influence of Work at the Computer LCD Monitors on Selected Functions of the Organ of Vision

Summary: Purpose: CRT monitors have been replaced by LCD monitors in modern computer sets. The purpose of this study was evaluation of influence of work at computer LCD monitors on selected functions of the organ of vision in computer operators.
Material and Methods: Visual acuity, refractive error, near point of accommodation and convergence, amplitude of relative accommodation, eye muscle balance, color vision before work and after 4 hours work at LCD monitor were compared in 51 people (48 women and 3 men) – administrative employees of Pomeranian Medical University. Additionally questionnaire data about work with computer was collected.
Results: Statistically considerable deteriorations of positive relative accommodation (PRA) after work at LCD monitor were found in all examined groups. Statistically significant difference in amplitude of relative accommodation was found in group with hyperopia and without refractive error.
Conclusions: Short-term work at LCD monitor may lead to weakening of accommodation, and has no effect on convergence and phoria.
