Summary: The blood vessels assessment and hemodynamical blood flow analysis is important for interpretation of pathological changes of eyeball and orbit. Understanding this mechanism provides elaboration of new experimental and therapeutical models.
Blood flow disturbance is identified as a risk factor for such ophthalmological diseases development as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration or high myopia. Analysis of ocular and retrobalbular blood flow gives information about eyeball circulation and it may enable the choice of strategies In treatment of systemic diseases: diabetes, arterial hypertension, diseases with thrombotic and vascular occlusion and autoimmunological diseases.
The authors of this review performed the literature review considering actually available and widely used diagnostic methods: angiography, scanning laser ophthalmology, pulsatile ocular blood flow and dynamic contour tonometry. The methods of blood flow measurement such as color doppler imaging, laser methods, Heidelberg retinal flowmeter, laser speckle method were also discussed. New techniques such as doppler optical coherence tomography, retinal vessel analysis, retinal oximetry were presented. According to the latest reports research considering use of radiological technique (magnetic resonance) for estimating blood flow still continues. The mentioned methods enable objective and quantitative evaluation of vascular system hemodynamic parameters.
Numerous methods and diagnostic techniques available seem to prove that the ideal investigative method considering eyeball vascular system condition does not exist.
