Summary: During pregnancy transient ocular changes are observed. They are associated with hormonal, metabolic, cardiovascular and immunological changes caused by pregnancy and rarely disturb the normal visual function. The most common physiologic changes are: changes in corneal sensitivity and thickness, decreased contact lenses tolerance, hyperpigmentation of tissues. Intraocular pressure usually decreases during pregnancy. The article summarizes literature regarding changes in intraocular pressure during pregnancy and describers mechanisms of these changes. In addition, we report results of our study conducted on 182 pregnant women. The study results showed that intraocular pressure significantly decreased during successive stages of pregnancy. The decrease was observed during 12th week of pregnancy and IOP was the lowest toward the end stages of pregnancy. Pregnancy does not seem to constitute a risk factor for progression of ocular hypertension or primary open angle glaucoma.
