Corneal Wounds Tightness and Biomechanics Evaluation on Animal Model

Summary: In our experiment we tried to evaluate the tightness of the corneal wounds formed – developed during cataract phacoemulsification procedure.
Experiment was conducted on pigs eyes. Mainly, lateral cuts has been made, as it is performed during typical cataract extraction procedure under clinical conditions. We have changed IOP values during our experiment via fluid infusion regulation and we created the force directly on the central cornea, while observing wounds tightness. In all cases, we have observed anterior chamber fluid leakage – first via lateral ports, both with lower and also higher pressure, while main wounds were tight. Wounds behaved similarly during direct force impact on the central cornea. Obtained results indicate the need for appropriate hydration not only within main cuts, but also smaller lateral cuts.
