Summary: Naevi are the most common melanocytic lesions of the choroid, usually found during routine ophthalmic examination. Typically, a choroidal naevus is flat or slightly raised, dark in colour and circumscribed. Chronic naevi may lead to degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium overlying the naevus . Sometimes secondary retinal changes may appear and although most naevi are benign all require differentiation from malignant melanoma, photographic documentation and regular observation. Optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive imaging technique, which uses optical scanning and is especially useful in the assessment of the retina and the adjacent part of the vitreous body. Because of poor penetration of the light beam into the choroid OCT can not give any in vivo information on the histology of choroidal lesion. On the other hand, it is possible to assess the status and morphology of the overlying retina, which is very important for the diagnosis and distinguishing the naevus from a malignant melanoma, especially if the lesion is small.
