Retina Imaging Using Optical Coherence Tomography in Eyes of Patients after Pars Plana Vitrectomy with Silicone Oil Tamponade

Summary: Purpose: Present own experience in evaluating anatomical results of pars plana vitrectomy in eyes filled with silicone oil using Optical Coherent Tomography technique.
Materials and Methods: OCT (SOCT-HR Copernicus instrument) examination was performed in patients one to six months after pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade. Surgery was carried out due to retinal detachment. In all cases satisfactory anatomical result was achieved and retina reattached, confirmed in biomicroscopy.
Results: In almost all patients high-resolution scans could be obtained and retinal layers visualized. In majority of cases regular, normal picture of the retina correlated with satisfactory functional effects of the surgery. However in cases with low visual acuity despite good anatomical state (reattached retina) we found pathologies that could not be observed in clinical slit-lamp examination such as thickening of retinal layers, perfluorocarbon liquid in front of the retina or macular oedema. Poor imaging of retina due to pathologies such as cataract, posterior capsule opacification or oil emulsification were main limitations of this method.
Conclusions: OCT is a new, diagnostic, non-invasive technique that can be easily performed in eyes filled with silicone oil after pars plana vitrectomy. In many cases it enables to gain more information about clinical state and explain not satisfactory function despite good anatomical results.
