Summary: Full-thickness macular hole is a defect of the retina extending from the internal limiting membrane to the retinal pigment epithelium in the foveal region. Formation of macular hole can last few weeks or even months, going through subsequent stages of development. Macular hole usually affects elderly patients, more often women and results in haziness, distortions and poor central vision. The formation of macular hole is mainly caused by the vitreomacular traction. Over the years, diagnostic methods and techniques for surgical treatment of the macular hole have evolved. Technological development of medical equipment has made diagnostics more precise, fast and safe. Introduction of optical coherence tomography has revolutionized ophthalmic diagnostics and it has become gold standard in macular hole diagnostics, progress monitoring, postoperative effects and allowed for a deeper understanding of its pathogenesis. In the article below, we present the latest, additional diagnostic (microperimetry, M-charts) and therapeutic methods (new surgical techniques and instruments) used for patients with macular hole.
