Summary: Introduction: Ocular injuries are one of the most common causes of children’s admissions to hospital. It’s frequency reflects the importance of the problem. The consequences of injuries could be permanent, partial or entire vision loss. Permanent impairment of vison disturbs harmonic development of a child and lowers the quality of its further life.
Aim: The aim of the work is to analyze ocular injuries requiring surgical management in Uniwersyteckie Centrum Kliniczne im. Prof. K. Gibińskiego Śląskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Katowicach.
Material and Methods: The data was collected from the books of admissions and medical histories of patients treated in above-mentioned department from May 2011 to February 2015.
Results: We have analysed 287 children (287 eyes). The average age of patients was 5.3 years. The character of injuries varied from most common superficial wounds of conjunctiva and cornea caused by a foreign body to complicated cases which were result of a bursts of firecrackers, chemical burns, dog’s bites or the injuries of orbits caused by direct trauma to the face. Serious cases were complicated e.g. by retinal detachment or vitreous haemorrhage.
Conclusions: Ocular injuries constitute important problem in Paediatric Ophthalmology. Immediate reaction of parents and quick referral to a highly specialized unit (a tertiary referral centre) in doubtful cases, is essential for effective treatment. Significant predictional factor is the time from the injury to admission to the hospital. Proper medical care is the basis for reducing the number of serious complications like permanent vision dysfunction/impairment and it’s results which can have immense impact on functioning in future life.
