Summary: Screening tests, contrary to diagnosing patients with advanced symptoms of the disease, allow us to discover disease at the early, often asymptomatic, stage. Screening tests used to involve significant amount of money, medical staff and personal appearance of the patient. In some situations electronic devices may play pivotal role in distance screening test which can decrease the need of access to medical care at the onset of diagnostic process.
The aim of this study was to compare several mobile applications which assess visual acuity, especially in children. The results were contrasted to traditional tests.
Accordance of our results with available bibliography was considerably high. However, few of devices tested have their own limitations. Standard scores of available tests will highly likely allow us to use them widely. Some crucial applications comprise visual acuity screening test, amblyopy prevention in children as well as eliciting some ophthalmic diseases in elderly patients (e. g. age-related macular degeneration).
