Summary: Optic neuritis is a common, often presenting manifestation of multiple sclerosis, with visual deficits and structural loss of retinal- axonal and neuronal- integrity. About 20% of patients with multiple sclerosis present with optic neuritis.
The most common symptoms of optic neuritis include decreased visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, defects in binocular vision, visual field abnormalities, reduced colour vision, blurred vision and diplopia.
The underlying etiology of multiple sclerosis and optic neuritis is still not known, but it is thought to be related to an interplay of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Several factors have been investigated, including infections with EBV and HHV viruses, low vitamin D level, distance from the equator in early childhood, month of birth, smoking and toxins.
