Summary: Diabetes mellitus belongs to civilization diseases and affect increasing number of people. One of the most serious complications of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which is the most common cause of sight loss in the working age population in developed countries. Screening programmes are very important element in early detection of diabetic retinopathy. They give a possibility to identify pathology on early stage of development, implement appropriate treatment, reduce lasting effects and improve quality of patient life. The costs of screening programme are less than costs of advanced pathology treatment. Development of telemedical network and digital retinal photography create new diagnostic possibilities, important through the prism of unsatisfied availability for ophthalmic care and increasing number of diabetic patients. The high quality of retinal image, electronic data transmission, artificial intelligence open the new chapter of medical diagnostics of diabetic retinopathy.
