Summary: Glaucoma is a long-life disease that requires continuous long-term cooperation between patient and doctor. The goal of glaucoma treatment is to maintain the patient’s visual function and related quality of life. Glaucoma treatment should be individualiszed and tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Long-term use of eye drops containing preservatives often causes or intensifies existing disturbances of the ocular surface and generates the side effects, which can considerably reduce patients’ quality of life and compliance and finally lead to treatment failure.
The article presents the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of latanoprost, the most commonly used analogue of prostaglandin F2α; in the second part of the review clinical characteristics of the new formula, preservative-free latanoprost were summarized. Clinical studies have shown that preservative-free latanoprost was associated with a lower risk of developing conjunctival hyperemia and better subjective rating of treatment comfort, providing the same hypotensive efficacy as benzalkonium chloride-preserved latanoprost.
