Early Treatment of Congenital Lacrimal Ducts Obstruction in Children – Own Observations

Summary: The congenital lacrimal duct obstruction is common ocular disease in infants and small children. Symptoms of lacrimal duct obstruction (epiphora, mucopurulent discharge in lacrimal sac and ocular irritation) are present from birth or they apper several weeks later. The probing of the lacrimal ducts is a standard therapy for this condition management. The timing of the operating procedure is still controversial. Purpose: Evaluate early treatment for congenital lacrimal duct obstruction in first months of child’s life.
Material and methods: 1048 children (447 girls i 601 boys) aged 2 weeks to 36 months with congenital lacrimal duct obstruction treated by syringing and probing of lacrimal ducts.
Results:The probing was succesful in all children, in 2.0% of children it was necessary to repeat the procedure twice times.
Conclusions: Early probing within first few months of child’s life is effective and safe procedure in congenital lacrimal duct obstructions.
