Contemporary Opinion on the Myopia Pathogenesis

Summary: Purpose: The aim of this paper is to describe and evaluate the contemporary opinions on the pathogenesis of myopia.
Material and methods: Review of the latest publications on the contemporary opinions on myopia pathogenesis was carried out. Special attention has been paid to genetic factors; anatomical, biochemical as well as scleral changes; on the influence of accommodation, the peripheral retina and the curvature of the cornea on the creation and development of myopia.
Results and Conclusions: The creation and development of myopia depends on various genetic and environmental factors. Despite the fact that myopia is such a serious contemporary social problem no effective method of this refractive error treatment has been devised. Only a few methods of myopia management have been introduced.
