Summary: The aim of this paper is to review the currently available rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGP) types and designs as well as their potential application in the management of more complex visual disorders.
Today specialists may use a wide selection of RGP contact lens designs and correct virtually all visual disorders and corneal irregularities.
This paper presents the current knowledge concerning modern RGP contact lenses. The paper also discusses available geometries and applications of the most popular corneal lens designs: rotationally symmetrical, toric and orthokeratology as well as scleral and semi-scleral designs, which become increasingly popular. Advanced manufacturing technologies provide contact lenses with very complex geometries, which allow for precise and individualized fitting even in case of significant corneal irregularities such as keratoconus, PMD, post-graft, post ocular trauma, LASIK induced ectasia, significant corneal astigmatism, etc. Modern materials with high gas permeability ensure that the corneal demand for oxygen is satisfied and ensure high safety of application. RGP contact lenses are often the only available method of correction in cases of severe visual disorders and corneal irregularities, ensure good quality of vision and normal functioning in everyday life.
The modern materials and lens designs, precise manufacturing and increasing accessibility of automated computer lens fitting systems ensure safe and comfortable contact lenses use.
