Summary: Introduction: Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by the differences in the optical power of the eye in each cross-section. Most
of the time it is of corneal origin, lens-related or mixed astigmatism is much rarer.
Purpose: The goal of this research was creating the epidemiology of astigmatism among Kashubians – the residents of Kartusian district. For comparative reasons similar research was conducted among Masovia residents and the results were then compared to the studied previously conducted in Poland. Significant portion of the article is dedicated to methodological concerns, including the factors restricting the comparison of the results with the results from other studies.
Material and Methods: Data of 2553 patients of a private practice in the Kashubian region, including 1645 women and 908 men, as well as 473 private practice patients from Masovia, including 300 women and 173 men, was analyzed. The average age for those studied was 43.1 years (SD 19.8) for the Kashubians and 36.1 years (SD 14.3) for Warsaw residents. For methodological reasons an optical power range was presumed: ≥0.25 DC, ≥0.75 DC, ≥1.25 DC, ≥2.25 DC, ≥4.00 DC.
Results: For the values ≥0.25 DC and ≥0.75 DC the difference between the regions was statistically significant (99% Cl) and probably stemmed from different specialists’ approach to the correction of marginal astigmatism. For higher values: ≥1.25 DC, ≥2.25 DC, ≥4.00 DC no statistically significant differences were proved.
Conclusions: The prevalence of astigmatism among Kashubians with refractive error is probably not higher than in other regions of Poland. For epidemiologic research of astigmatism comparing error of higher values is recommended.
