Amniotic Membrane Use in Ocular Eye Disorders

Summary: Amniotic membrane was first used at the beginning of the 20th century by Davis. From that time use and indications for that biological material and its’ obtaining and preparation methods changed a lot. Amniotic membrane transplantation AMT is nowadays widely used procedure in ophthalmology. It’s being used as biological bandage in various ocular surface disorders management and treatment. The authors wanted to present overwiev of amniotic membrane use in ophthalmology. Due to its’ unique structure it poseses many properties enabling its’ use in various ocular surface disorders treatment. It supports epithelium function, due to facilitating epithelial cells migration and their endothelial differentiation, improves basement cells adhesion and protects from apoptosis, increases tear film stability, inhibits fibrosis and has anti-inflammatory action. The indications for amniotic membrane use include: keratoepitheliopathies, problems with superficial corneal healing, corneal erosions and abrasions, corneal distrophies, bullous keratopathy, problems with ocular surface after chemical or thermal burns, as additional measures in ocular surface and conjunctival fornices reconstruction procedures, etc.
