Topography and Tomography of the Cornea

Summary: Techniques that can be used to examine the cornea can be divided into qualitative and quantitative. Among the later methods, the most important are those used to evaluate the shape of the cornea. Conventional videokeratoscopes (topographs) are used to assess the anterior surface of the cornea in the centre and paracentrally. The result is based on the analysis of the distorted reflections form the anterior surface of the cornea. Instruments that are able to provide cross-section images are called tomographs. Rendering of a number of the tomographs allows 3D reconstruction of the anterior segment of the eye. Currently used techniques to perform non-invasive tomography of the cornea are: scanning slit technology, Scheimpflug camera and optical coherence tomography. Tomographs allow to evaluate shape of both anterior and posterior surface of the cornea, its thickness, anterior chamber depth, irido-corneal angle and some other parameters.
