Summary: Purpose: The aim of this paper was to investigate on a large population changes of ocular refraction among Polish schoolchildren.
Material and methods: 5553 children from elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools were examined (2669 boys and 2884 girls, aged 6-18 years, mean age 11.9, SD = 3.2). The examined students were Caucasian and resided in and around Szczecin, Poland. The examination included retinoscopy under cycloplegia induced with 1% tropicamide. The ocular refraction was expressed as the spherical equivalent (SE). Data analysis was performed using chi-squared Pearson test; p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results: In the performed investigations it was found that with age the state of ocular refraction decreases among Polish schoolchildren. This appears as a gradual reduction of the spherical equivalent in the examined population (p<0.001).
Conclusions: The ocular refraction of Polish schoolchildren reduces with age.
