Investigations on Anisometropia Occurrence in Poland

Summary: Purpose: TThe aim of this paper was to describe the occurrence of anisometropia among 18 year old individuals in Poland as well as to investigate if and what environmental factors have an influence on anisometropia prevalence.
Material and methods: The study was carried out on a group of high school students in Szczecin, Poland aged 18 years. A total number of 1040 students including 381 boys and 659 girls were examined. The students filled out questionnaire about environmental factors potentially influencing anisometropia development. Retinoscopy was performed after cycloplegia using 1% Tropicamide. It was established that anisometropia occurs when the difference in the spherical equivalent between the right and left eye is greater than 1.00 D sph. All of the collected data was stored in an electronic database using the Microsoft EXCEL computer program and later analyzed with Statistica 6.1 software. In order to compare quantitative variables the Mann-Whitney U test was used. In the analysis of nominal variables the chi-square test with Yates’ correction was used. P values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results: The prevalence of anisometropia among 18 year old students was 6.73% with a slightly higher incidence in girls than in boys. It has been determined that people who read and write a lot have more often anisometropia ( p<0.0001). No significant relationship between the occurrence of anisometropia and the amount of time spent on visual work on a computer or watching television or physical exercise was observed.
Conclusions:
1. The occurrence of anisometropia in Poland is close to the levels of this refractive error in other countries.
2. Intensive near work may predispose to a higher occurrence of anisometropia.
