Summary: Purpose: The aim of the paper was to study refractive errors occurrence in Polish schoolchildren.
Material and methods: A review of the literature concerning the occurrence of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism was done.
Results: It was found that 12.6% of Polish students in the age group from 6 to 18 were myopic, 38.1% of students were hyperopic and 3.5% were astigmatic. A positive correlation was described between the prevalence of myopia and age as well as a negative correlation between prevalence of hyperopia and age. It was also observed that myopia occurs more frequently in girls than in boys, hyperopia occurs more frequently in boys than in girls. Besides, it was determined that myopia occurs more frequently among children living in the city than in the countryside.
Conclusions: Refractive errors are very serious social problem existing among Polish schoolchildren. Increase of the prevalence of myopia is particularly worried.
