Summary: Corticosteroids are drugs with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They derive from natural hormones, produced in adrenal glands. They are widely used in ophthalmology. Indications for their application are following: acute and chronic allergic ocular diseases, anterior and posterior uveitis, after ocular trauma and as a postoperative care, keratopathies, dry eye syndrome. Relative contraindicationssteroids use are acute ocular fungal and viral infections especially Herpes Simplex infectious epithelial keratitis. Caution should be administered when a patient has glaucoma, since 20% of population may respond with great intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. Steroids may be applied as eye drops, suspension or ointment, also as intravitreous, periorbital or subconjunctival injection and also systemic – oral or intarvenous. Their administration should be under ophthalmologist control because of potential side effects. As complications following symptoms may occur: burning sensation, photophobia, conjunctival hyperaemia during application, also cataract development and IOP elevation. New specimens have better tolerance and safety. Steroids products have major meaning in ophthalmology, they demonstrate great efficacy and rapid symptoms reduction.
