Summary: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate astigmatic component of the refractive error after cycloplegic eye drops use in a group of 6 and 7 years old children who start school education.
Material and methods: Refractive error examination program joined 104 children starting school education. Distance visual acuity was examined in all children. Refractive error was observed in 97 pupils after cycloplegic drops with 1% Tropicamidum which was administrated two times with 5 minutes break.
Refractive error was evaluated using autorefractometer Tomey RC – 4000 20 minutes after drops were instilled the second time.
Results: After cycloplegia, astigmatism of 0.75 dptr or greater at least in one eye was observed in 29 children. Mean astigmatism value among children with astigmatism of 0.75 dptr or greater to 1.36 0.78 (dptr) for right eye and 1.3 0.9 (dptr) for left eye. Most cases of this refractive error was compound hyperopic astigmatism. Astigmatism with-a-rule predominated as well. 1/3 of children with astigmatism of 0.75 dptr or greater had visual acuity not better than 0.6.
Conclusions: Astigmatism among children starting school education is one of the commonest, but not so often revealed and corrected visual disorder. Not corrected astigmatism can be the fundamental factor which reduces visual acuity and makes worse children development and educational achievements. Among 6 years old children not only visual acuity evaluation but also objective refractive error examination is worth doing.
