OCT Usefulness Assessment in Children with Amblyopia and Strabismus

Summary: Purpose: To assess the retinal thickness and retinal anatomic abnormalities in children with amblyopia. Subjects and methods: SOCT (Selective Ophthalmic Coherent Tomography) was performed in 32 children with unilateral amblyopia due to anisometropia. Retinal thickness measurements in the fovea and fasciculus neuroretinalis in amblyopic eye and the proportionality between selected anatomical parts (retinal nerve fiber, retinal pigment epithelium and retinal rest region) were taken. Results were compared with OCT outcomes in normal, healthy eye. Results: The average thickness of the fovea was 216.8 ?m in amblyopic eyes and 216.5 ?m in normal eyes. The thickness measured in fasciculus neuroretinalis 347.12 and 346.9 ?m, respectively. The difference between two groups was not statistically significant. Conclusions: SOCT bring the new information about retinal morphology in amblyopic children. Precise assessment of our results need further observation.
