Summary: Modern working environments present a significant challenge to ocular comfort, particularly among contact lenses wearers. This article looks at the effects of long hours of computer use and everyday exposure to heated and air-conditioned surroundings on the eyes and suggests some useful management strategies. Think of an environment likely to test the resilience of a contact lens wearer and locations with extremes of temperature, humidity or altitude may spring to mind. But the reality is that adverse conditions can be experienced much closer to home. Modern working environments and lifestyles present increasing challenges to the eyes and, in particular, to comfortable contact lens wear. Ocular symptoms associated with prolonged use of computer monitors and small screens include dry and irritated eyes, eyestrain, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. Headaches and other, non-ocular, symptoms such as neck and/or backache may also be reported.
