Summary: Fungal invasion of soft contact lenses is potentially serious complication of their use. Lenses contaminated with fungi can lead to development of the fungal keratitis, and many cases progress to severe fulminating infections. More than 60 fungal species have been reported as pathogenic to the cornea. Filamentous fungi are more likely to be associated with cosmetic or aphakic lens wear, whereas yeasts are more frequently found with therapeutic lens use. Fungal keratitis is an uncommon complication of soft contact lens use, but it should be considerd in the differential diagnosis of corneal infiltrates and ulcers. Regular replacement of soft lenses potentially reduces the risk of lens contamination and microbial keratitis.
